Vegan Diet at my Local Grocery

As some of you may know, I went vegan a couple of months ago! So far it’s been really good. I want to do a whole post about it, but I want to wait & keep at it for longer because although I have seen some improvements, I really want to make sure I know what I’m doing & talking about!

This post is basically going to be my shopping list since I’ve gone vegan. I wanted to show you guys that it’s possible to have a certain “high-maintenance” diet without spending a ton of money. One of the main reasons I went vegan was to try & save money! But I think sometimes people think that when you eat vegan, you can only shop at places like Sprouts or Whole Foods or all those other specialty grocery stores. I love those stores, but they are sooo expensive! And that is totally not the point of eating vegan! So I’m going to give you guys a break down of what I buy at Safeway & some of my favorite vegan brands that can be found there.

PRODUCE – Vegetables & fruit are the basis of my diet. I literally eat a salad for at least one meal a day, if not two. I don’t eat organic, so that saves me money, but I try to stick to the veggies that I eat on a regular basis in my salads or with hummus. (I would eat hummus for breakfast, lunch & dinner if I could.) My go-to’s are: peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, & apples. I also get frozen broccoli. I’m allergic to a lot of fruit unfortunately, so I rely on vegetables for my fresh food. I might get seasonal fruit if it’s not too expensive though!

DAIRY – So I don’t actually eat any dairy because that was another main reason I went vegan. I love cheese, but it’s so expensive & just really not healthy, at least for me. I also hate milk, so almond milk is not a problem for me. I usually get unsweetened vanilla. I can’t drink coffee without creamer though & I was so worried I was going to have to give that up or spend a ton on an alternative, but luckily my favorite brand is already dairy free! Coffeemate is my go-to & I think they are all dairy free, but I can’t be sure of that! I just know my favorite flavors are. (Hazelnut & vanilla in case you were wondering…)

CANNED GOODS – Canned goods are so cheap, but they can have a lot of added sugar & salt, which brings down the health factor. I always buy beans for my protein, & I recently discovered that pinto beans are the best. I will usually get tomato sauce because spaghetti is another quick easy meal I love that doesn’t necessarily need meat to be good. I’ll get non-creamy dressing to avoid dairy, & then mustard for the hummus wraps I live off of. I’m also totally digging beets these days – I am Dwight Schrute.

GRAINS – I just recently discovered that my favorite bread has milk & eggs :/ so I switched to Thomas’s Everything bagels, which are just as good if not better! I also get tortillas to make wraps & stuff.

SNACKS – The most important meal of the day if you ask me haha. I always get popcorn, & nuts are also a healthy choice.

FAVORITE VEGAN BRANDS –  Okay, so ever since going vegan I love finding new brands that are dairy free & meatless. Gardein makes the best meatless meat haha. I recently tried their “chicken sliders” for the Super Bowl & they were so good. I’m always skeptical of stuff that isn’t “real” meat, but these aren’t even that bad. But they are expensive. I also already mentioned Coffeemate, but their creamer is the best. I also already talked about my fave bagels, but Thomas’s Everything bagels are basically everything to me.

This post is longer than I thought it would be, but I eat a lot, okay! I really want to do a grocery hall or a what I eat in a day, but I think those would be better as videos. I figure if I talk enough about making a YouTube channel & making videos, I’ll get the bravery to do it. Speak it into existence.

I hope you guys liked this post because it was so much fun to write! Grocery shopping is one of my favorite chores, as you guys can probably tell! If you eat vegan or even vegetarian, what are some of your favorite brands? Let me know in the comments or DM me on social media!

P.S. Oreos are vegan, so if you weren’t already convinced…

Why I love yoga & you should too

I started doing yoga when I was in high school. Or if you count those at home yoga videos that your mom does, than I’ve been doing it since I was about five. But I didn’t seriously get into it & start to feel & see the benefits of it until I came to college.

I took my first real yoga class (not just using Pinterest for ideas) my freshman year & loved it. I walked out of that first class tired, but so refreshed. I felt like I could conquer the world. And I never wanted to stop feeling that way. It is a kind of high. Yoga high. And I’m kinda addicted.

Now I’m definitely no yoga expert, but you don’t have to be to know that it truly makes a difference in how you feel. And it’s honestly a really good workout. I think some people see it as “too easy”, but trust me, it’s not. But what I love about it is I never feel bad when I can’t hold a certain pose or stretch farther, because it’s a competition with yourself. It feels so good to be in a room full of people who don’t care about what you’re doing because they’re so focused on themselves & improving themselves.

This summer I got into a routine of doing it nightly & I don’t know if it’s just me thinking I’m awesome, but I feel like I got more toned. And my mindset was definitely calmer. I also have a really hard time falling asleep so doing it right before I go to bed is the best natural way for me to fall asleep.

I’ve tried to get my friends into yoga before by taking them to classes, but they just don’t get into it because it’s “too slow.” And I get it: it’s definitely not as exciting as Zumba or cycling, but it’s a different kind of fun. Sometimes it’s frustrating when I’m not flexible enough or strong enough to do a certain pose, but once you do it for the first time, it’s the best feeling ever. Yoga is about growing as a person & overcoming challenges & a lot of other stuff that will just make you an overall better person lol. So I’m not forcing you to put on your Lulu’s right now, but I’m telling you that it will make you feel so much better. And we all want to feel good right?

I’ve linked my Pinterest workout board here, so you guys can do some yoga challenges & sequences if this post was at all inspiring. 😉

What’s your favorite workout class you’ve ever done? I want to get into other stuff so let me know in the comments or DM me on social media!

Hygge 101

I was first introduced to Hygge on Pinterest (of course) & loved the idea of it. It’s about living simply & trying to enjoy every day in some way possible. This semester has been a stressful one so I’m looking for ways to relax & be happy despite everything going on! As I kept reading about Hygge I realized that it incorporates everything I love & focuses on the things that are most important in life. I made a graphic for you guys that pinpoints what Hygge is all about! I’m super into it & I think now is the perfect time to slow down & be grateful!!

Let me know what you think about this in the comments or on social media! Also, do you guys like graphics?? Should I do them more often??

The Perfectly Packed Gym Bag

The perfect workout begins with the right equipment. I’m not talking dumbbells & jump ropes; I’m talking the stuff you need in your gym bag for before & after breaking a sweat. If you have your gym bag packed & ready to go the night before, that 6am jog won’t be half bad. Here are the things I always keep in my gym bag:

1.) Makeup Bag

For the essentials, obviously.

2.)Makeup Remover Wipes

Don’t forget to wipe your face before & after sweating it out.

3.) Deodorant

Your gym crush will never be anything more than eye candy if you smell bad.

4.) Chapstick

I don’t leave the house without it.

5.) Hair Brush

Tame your flyaways…

6.) Hair ties & Headband

Have you ever tried working out with your hair down?

The perfect bag for all the little things.

7.) Body Spray

See #3.

8.) Hand Sanitizer

I don’t even want to know how many people touched the treadmill handles before I did.

9.) Yoga Mat

You can crunch without worrying about contacting lice.

10.) Headphones

If I had to choose only one item to have in my gym bag, it would be this.

11.) Snack

Preferably not a brownie or bag of chips. Bars are always a good choice, or bring a packet of protein to mix into a drink.

12.) Water

I think this is a given.

What are your must-have gym bag items? Let me know in the comments or on social media!

My Fitness Routine

“I love running!”- said no one ever.

I’m going to admit that running is one of my favorite ways to break a sweat, but some days it’s hard to leave my cozy bed for the thought of going to sweat in a smelly gym. But coming up with a schedule & routine that works for me has helped me get out of bed on even the coldest, darkest, sleepiest mornings. I’m such an organized, scheduled person in every aspect of my life, but especially when it comes to working out, because it keeps me accountable & motivated; which is something we all need!

I like to switch up my fitness routine every season so I don’t burn out. I also take the time to relax & meditate while I’m stretching to have some zen time before a busy day. It boosts my mood & finishes my workout on a positive note.

Below I’ve attached my workout schedule in hopes to inspire you to pick something you love, & stick with it.
