Goodbye Boredom

Your sunburn has turned to a tan. The pool floats are popped. The thought of ice cream makes you sick. Now what?

Below, I’ve created a list of the Top 10 Things I like to do when I find myself with too much free time. And they are all reasonable (meaning they don’t require a million dollars or last minute passport).

1.) Redecorate

If you ask my friends & family, this is all I ever do. But when I get bored, I start to sit & think about what I could change up in my room & before you know it, everything is out of it’s place & my room is a different color. (JK, it’s not that bad.)

2.) DIY

Pinterest is where to start with this one. I have an entire board on Pinterest dedicated to crafts & ideas I want to try when I have the time. I’m also thinking about making a DIY section on this blog so… let me know if that’s something y’all would like!

3.) Bake

But seriously, there are a lot of good recipes on Pinterest that may require special ingredients or time that you can’t make on a regular day when you’re just craving something sweet. Now is the time to try that homemade red, white & blue layer cake topped with sparklers.

4.) Spa Day

Who doesn’t love a massage or pedicure? If you can’t afford a professional spa day, treat yourself at home. Get some ideas here.

5.) Thrift Store Shopping

I recently found a pair of old Levi’s at a thrift store & I was able to turn them into denim shorts. You never know what you’ll find…

6.) Dollar Store Shopping

Along the same lines, I love going to go to the dollar store & finding knick knack beauty products or holiday decorations for cheap.

7.) Photoshoot

You don’t even need a fancy camera or designer clothes either. Plan a photoshoot with some friends & explore your town for candid spots. Late evening is a great time to take photos anyway, so it’s a perfect hot weather activity!

8.) Attend a Matinee

Afternoon showings of movies are generally cheaper than night, so stay inside & catch a show!

9.) Color

And then have a snack & take a nap! Kidding, but there are a lot of coloring books made for adults that are actually pretty cool. And they make great artwork to add to your newly remodeled room 😉

10.) Organize

Okay so not everyone is as OCD as I am when it comes to having a clean space, but it can feel really good to get rid of stuff, as well as get organized for the next school year & figure out what you need. Save yourself the last minute stress & do it now.

Let me know what kinds of things you like to do when you’re bored in the comments or on social media! I hope this helps kill your summer blues…

Fashion Hacks to Minimize Sweat

Summer is probably my least favorite time of year in terms of dressing. I feel like no matter what I put on, I’ll just end up sweating & ruining my look. I also live in Arizona where an average day in July could be 115 degrees. So in this post, I present to you the few hacks I have learned for still looking presentable in the dog days of summer.

The top tip I suggest is wearing a bralette or better yet, nothing at all. Bralettes work well with backless dresses if you can’t pull off the no-bra look, & they also don’t have an underwire that causes uncomfortableness & boob sweat. (Don’t even get me started.)

Second tip: wear loose & flowy clothing as much as possible. Peplum tops, t-shirt dresses & cotton shorts are just a few of my go-tos.

Also, wear light colors as much as possible. Not only do light colors not show sweat as much, but technically, they should help keep you cooler.

Most importantly, don’t bother doing your hair. If you live in humidity, you probably already know that. Not only is it a good excuse to give your locks a break, but you don’t have to worry about neck sweat & all that comes with wearing your hair down in the summer. Try a messy ponytail with a bandana like shown here, or easy braids like this one.

Last but not least, minimize your accessories. Limit chunky necklaces, scarves & backpacks. Try thin chokers, bandanas & cross body purses. You’ll thank yourself later!

I hope these tips help y’all! Let me know what you do to minimize sweat this time of year because I would definitely like to know!

Staycation Recap

Today is the Monday-est Monday ever, if that’s even a thing! I’m still in vacation mode. But speaking of vacation, below are some pictures from my stay at Scottsdale Camelback Resort this weekend. I planned on taking the time to shoot more, but I honestly got so caught up in actually being present, that I forgot all about it. I think it’s important to take time to relax & not focus on work, & vacation is the perfect time to do that.

Possibly the best part of the whole weekend… the Cupcake ATM! I got a carrot cake cupcake & wow, devine. 10/10 would recommend making a stop if you’re ever in Scottsdale!
I got to catch up with a college friend! Long distance friendships are hard.
I spent most of my time lying poolside trying not to burn! And also catching up on Vogue.

I wish I had more to share, but honestly it felt good to not be so focused on finding the next ‘grammable thing & just be able to relax. Keep an eye out for more pics of my whereabouts…

OOTW

It’s finally the weekend! It’s been a long week. I started an internship at an office so I’m full on adulting, but I get to do what I love so I can’t complain!

I went on a day trip to Flagstaff last week to go hiking with one of my good friends who also happens to take really great pictures… so of course we had to have a photoshoot! I got a lot of good feedback about my background for my outfit of the week last week, so I’ll try to stay creative for y’all!

P.S. Also, I’m as white as the wall, & I promise I tan, but you gotta do what you gotta do to match your theme…

This is the first sun hat I bought & I’ve worn it so much! If there is one item that can take your look from “eh” to “YAS!”  it’s a cute hat.

Tanning Essentials

It is finally June which means there’s no denying it’s officially summer time. If you’re anything like me, you’re dreading the heat, but looking forward to the dark glow you’ll have come September.

I used to spend my summer days lying out baking. Because of that, I have plenty of tips & essentials that are necessary to survive a day of sunning. I still use a lot of these products when I’m at the beach or hanging poolside with friends, even though I’ve switched to the less natural, yet safer, version of tanning. You can find the perfect self tanner here.

The first, most important item, is sunscreen. I used to avoid wearing sunscreen if I was going to be around people because some don’t smell good at all. But I found the perfect high SPF sunscreen that doesn’t smell & it has been a lifesaver. I use Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Lotion Sunscreen in SPF 30, and it can be found at most drugstores. When tanning, it is important to have some protection, so an SPF of 30 protects your skin, but doesn’t take away from that color!

After liberally applying sunblock, I put on Banana Boat Protective Spray Oil. It’s a tanning oil that has shine & aids in a quicker tan, but also offers some protection from those rays.

To protect my face from the sun, I wear a hat. Function & fashion. Shop my cute picks here:

Pom Pom Straw Hat

Can’t forget about the eyes. I dig cat eye sunglasses. My favorites here.

Once you’re fully protected from the sun & ready to relax, put on some music & grab a book or magazine. Tanning is the perfect excuse to binge read Vogue or finish that book that’s been on your nightstand for 3 months. For some ideas of what to read, check out my article here.

And of course, any time you are going to be out in the sun, drink water! Lemon slices & umbrella  straw optional…

Happy tanning!

P.S.A. I realize you need to have a WordPress account to comment on articles, so if you don’t have an account, feel free to comment on my social media or DM me! I’d love to talk with y’all & hear what you have to say.

Happy Friday!

I got creative with the background for my outfit of the week. My town actually has a lot of cute spots to take pictures so I decided to give it a try. I recently got a nice camera & I’ve been looking for any opportunity to try it out & practice.

The dress is from Old Navy. It makes a great cover up & is super flowy so it’s my favorite thing to wear on hot summer days when clothes are the last thing I want to think about! Photo by Rachel Spillane @rachellspillane

Happy three day weekend!

This week’s outfit of the week incorporates an off-the-shoulder top & a floppy sun hat; two of my favorite fashion items at the moment. It’s the perfect outfit for the farmers market or lunch with a friend. I will link similar items below so you can recreate this outfit on your own!

Hat-Forever 21

Top- Forever 21

Booties- Nordstrom

The hat is from Forever 21 & the top is from one of my favorite LA boutiques. The booties are definitely my most worn pair of shoes & I got them at Rue a few years ago. (My feet stopped growing when I was super young, so shoe shopping is easy!)

Top 5 Summer Beauty Essentials

I love summer for so many reasons, but one of my favorite parts of the season is the low-key look that is always in style. A dark tan, mascara, some highlight & lip color & you’re set. Below, I’ve outlined the essentials I use to create the perfect, laid back look that we all want this time of year.

The first product I swear by is Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer. It’s a self tanner that can be applied straight out of the shower & takes the place of your regular body lotion. It creates a gradual tan that doesn’t smell & leave any orange residue or streaks. I did some research on self tanners because I’ve been reading a lot about skin cancer & how tanning increases the risk, so I decided to try the more artificial way of adding color!

My second favorite product is a Charcoal & Black Sugar face mask. It feels so cool on my face & exfoliates my skin as I apply it. It’s super easy to take on & off & leaves the skin feeling so soft. A must try for your next spa night!

Another product I’ve been using for awhile now, but continue to love, is the Herbivore Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist. It comes in a cute glass bottle & takes only a few sprits to refresh all day makeup & hydrate. I’m all about hydrating from the inside & out!

For summer makeup I don’t like applying a full face unless I’m going out because I usually end up just sweating off what I just put on! I’ll usually start with sunscreen & primer & then just add a bit of highlight to the cheek bones. I use the Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector  because it has just enough subtle shimmer to not look too glam, but add a glow. I tend to use the lighter colors so the color looks more natural.

The last product I can’t live without is Burts Bees Lip Shimmer. It adds a tint of color, but isn’t overwhelming like most lipsticks. I apply it over regular chapstick & then again throughout the day. There are so many color options & I usually stick to neutrals, but feel free to experiment!

Those are my beauty staples for this season & all year around as well! The Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer is great for adding some color in the dead of winter & the Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mask is perfect for using mid-day to freshen up makeup. I’ve linked all the products below:
